History

Lanka Premier League

The Lanka Premier League was established in 2020 as Sri Lanka’s flagship franchise T20 tournament. Originally planned for 2018, administrative issues delayed the launch by two years. Since its inception, the league has grown into one of Asia’s premier T20 competitions, attracting international stars alongside Sri Lanka’s best domestic talent. Five editions have been played, with Jaffna Kings (formerly Jaffna Stallions) dominating the trophy cabinet.

2020: Jaffna Stallions Write the Opening Chapter

The inaugural LPL featured five teams at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota. Jaffna Stallions, led by Thisara Perera, won the title by beating Galle Gladiators by 53 runs in the final. Shoaib Malik earned Player of the Match, while Avishka Fernando was the tournament’s breakout star.

2021: Jaffna Kings Go Back-to-Back

Rebranded as Jaffna Kings, the franchise retained Thisara Perera as captain and beat Galle Gladiators by 23 runs in the final. Avishka Fernando won Player of the Series. Kusal Mendis (327 runs for Galle) and Maheesh Theekshana (16 wickets for Jaffna) were the individual standouts.

2022: Jaffna Kings Complete the Three-Peat

At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Jaffna Kings beat Colombo Stars by 2 wickets in a thrilling final to claim an unprecedented third consecutive LPL title. Sadeera Samarawickrama was Player of the Series. Carlos Brathwaite (Kandy Falcons) took the most wickets in the season with 18.

2023: B-Love Kandy Break the Jaffna Monopoly

Under veteran captain Angelo Mathews, B-Love Kandy (now Kandy Falcons) ended Jaffna’s three-year reign by beating Dambulla Aura by 5 wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga won Player of the Series with consistent all-round displays. This was the only edition not won by Jaffna.

2024: Jaffna Kings Return to the Throne

Jaffna reclaimed the title with a dominant 9-wicket victory over Galle Marvels in the final, chasing 185 in just 15.4 overs. Rilee Rossouw was Player of the Series. Tim Seifert (Galle, 400 runs) was the tournament’s top scorer, while Shadab Khan (Colombo Strikers, 17 wickets) led the bowling charts.

2026: Galle Gallants Claim Their Maiden LPL Title

The Galle Gallants ended Jaffna Kings’ reign by defeating them by 5 wickets in the final at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Jaffna were bowled out for 123 in 19.3 overs, before Galle chased the target with 127/5 in 15.5 overs. Charith Asalanka, who took 3/20, was named Player of the Match, while Kamil Mishara won Player of the Series. The victory marked the Galle Gallants’ first-ever Lanka Premier League championship.
